A misfire is one of the more diagnosable faults if you go in the right order, so here is that order.
One dead cylinder makes the whole engine shake. The code says which cylinder; you test which part.
What does a misfire actually mean?
A misfire means one or more cylinders are not burning their fuel and air properly. Each cylinder normally contributes an even pulse of power, and when one drops out the engine runs unevenly. That imbalance is felt as shaking, and it is always worst at idle, because at idle there is nothing to mask it. At speed the other cylinders and the road noise hide it, but sitting at a light it shakes the whole car.
For a cylinder to fire it needs three things: a spark at the right moment, the right amount of fuel, and good compression. A misfire is one of those three failing, so the whole diagnosis is just working out which one, on which cylinder.
Why start with the spark plugs and coils?
Because ignition faults are by far the most common cause of a misfire, and they are the cheapest to check and fix. Spark plugs wear out, and worn plugs with a gap that has grown too wide struggle to spark reliably, especially under load. If the plugs are overdue for replacement, that alone is often the answer.
Ignition coils are the next suspect. Most modern engines have one coil per cylinder, and when a coil weakens or fails, that one cylinder misfires. Coils fail with age and heat, and a hot climate is hard on them.
So the sensible sequence is plugs first, then coils, because between them they cause most misfires and they are inexpensive compared with what comes later.
What is the coil-swap test?
It is the single most useful trick for a misfire, and anyone can understand the logic. Say the fault code says cylinder three is misfiring. Move the coil from cylinder three to cylinder one, and move cylinder one's coil to three. Clear the code and run the engine again.
If the misfire moves to cylinder one, it followed the coil, so the coil is the fault. If the misfire stays on cylinder three, the coil is fine and the problem is something else on that cylinder, a plug, an injector or compression.
The same logic works with spark plugs. It turns guessing into a definite answer, and it costs nothing but a few minutes. This is exactly the kind of test that separates replacing the right part from throwing parts at a car.
When is it the injector or something else?
If the spark side checks out, move to fuel. A blocked or leaking injector gives that cylinder the wrong amount of fuel, causing a misfire that stays with the cylinder even after swapping the coil and plug. Injectors can be tested, and on some engines the same swap logic applies.
Beyond spark and fuel there are causes that affect the whole engine rather than one cylinder, and these often show as a rough idle rather than a single-cylinder misfire code. A vacuum leak lets in unmetered air and upsets the mixture. A dirty throttle body or idle control can give a lumpy idle. A worn timing chain that has altered the valve timing affects running. And carbon build-up on the valves of a direct injection engine is a common cause of rough running that no single-cylinder test will pin down.
Compression is the last thing to check, because it is the most involved and the least common. If one cylinder has low compression from a mechanical fault such as a burnt valve or worn rings, it will misfire no matter how good the spark and fuel are. A compression test confirms it, and it is the point at which the repair becomes a bigger job.
Why does the misfire come and go?
An intermittent misfire is often a coil or plug that fails only when hot or under load, which is why it can feel fine cold and misfire once warmed up, or only when accelerating. A weak coil may spark well at idle and break down under the higher demand of load.
Damp can also cause an intermittent misfire, particularly if there is a crack in a coil or a plug lead letting the spark leak to earth when it is wet. A misfire that appears on damp mornings and clears when dry points that way.
Because intermittent faults are harder to catch, the freeze-frame data stored with the fault code, showing the conditions when the misfire happened, is useful for narrowing down whether it is heat, load or damp related.
Is it safe to drive with a misfire?
It depends on the engine light. A steady engine light with a mild misfire means it should be looked at soon, but it is not usually an emergency. You can drive gently and book it in.
A flashing engine light is different and it is urgent. It means a misfire severe enough that raw, unburnt fuel is passing into the exhaust, where it overheats and destroys the catalytic converter, an expensive part. It can also risk further engine damage. If the light is flashing, ease off the throttle, avoid high load, and get it seen straight away rather than continuing to drive normally.
Common questions
How often should spark plugs be changed? It varies widely by engine and plug type, from around every thirty thousand kilometres to well over a hundred thousand. Overdue plugs are a very common misfire cause, so if they are old, start there.
Can one bad coil cause the whole engine to shake? Yes. One dead cylinder unbalances the engine and shakes the whole car at idle, even though only one coil is at fault.
Why does my car misfire only when accelerating? Load raises the demand on the ignition, so a weak coil or worn plug that copes at idle can break down under acceleration. It points at ignition under load.
Does a misfire always show a fault code? A clear misfire usually sets a code naming the cylinder. A very mild or intermittent one may cause rough running before it sets a code, which is why a rough idle with no code still deserves checking.
Can bad fuel cause a misfire? Poor or contaminated fuel can, and it can also foul plugs and injectors over time. It is worth considering in markets where fuel quality varies, alongside the usual ignition checks.
