What the boost sensor does
It measures the pressure in the intake — on a turbo engine, that's the boost. The computer checks what it asked for against what the sensor reports, and if the two don't line up, it protects the engine and drops into limp mode.
Notice what that means: the computer has no other way to see the boost. It believes the sensor, full stop. So if the sensor's lying, everything the computer decides after that is wrong too.

Why it reads low
Same reason a MAF goes lazy — it gets dirty. Oil mist and soot coat the sensing element, especially on a diesel, especially one with a tired breather or a heavy EGR flow. A coated element responds slowly and reads low. The turbo's making perfect boost. The sensor just says it isn't.
So the computer sees a shortfall that doesn't exist and yanks the engine into limp mode. Customer's got no power. Somebody reads the code and quotes a turbo.
The right order to check
Start with the least invasive evidence-based checks before condemning the turbo. One: the sensor — clean or replace, a relatively small part. Two: a boost leak — a split hose, a loose clamp, a cracked intercooler; a smoke test finds it in ten minutes for almost nothing. Three: the actuator — a few hundred, and worth testing before you condemn it. Four, and last: the turbo itself.
Most people start at four. That's the whole problem right there.
The line that gets you remembered
Say this and it sticks: a boost code just tells you the computer's unhappy about a number — so check whether the number's wrong before you decide the turbo's wrong. Test the sensor against actual measured pressure, smoke test for leaks, and only then start talking turbo.
And look what that does for you. You just talked a customer out of an expensive part he didn't need. Next time he needs anything, he's calling you first — because you're the only supplier who ever told him not to buy something.
What to order
Small, light, is easy to consolidate into a mixed shipment. Engine-specific, and here's the trap: a lot of turbo engines have more than one pressure sensor — one before the throttle, one in the manifold, sometimes one in the exhaust. They look alike and have different part numbers. So ask which position, or ask for the VIN.

Frequently asked questions
Can a boost sensor be cleaned? Sometimes, with proper electronics cleaner and a very gentle touch — never scrape the element. If it's oil-soaked, cleaning might buy you a diagnosis, not a repair.
Why does oil keep coating it? Check the breather and the PCV system — that's where the oil mist comes from. Replace the sensor and ignore the breather and you're back in six months.
New sensor, still in limp mode — why? Continue with the vehicle procedure for leak testing, actuator checks, wiring and turbo condition. A replacement sensor does not prove the original diagnosis.
