Why speed changes everything
Out on the highway the car's own movement rams air straight through the radiator. The fan's barely doing anything — the wind is doing the work. Crawl into traffic and all that stops. Now the only thing pulling air through the radiator is the fan. So if the fan's gone lazy, the only time you'll ever notice is exactly when you're stuck in traffic. Cool on the move, boiling at the lights.
I confirm the VIN, fan diameter, blade fitment, hub thread or bolt pattern and the clutch calibration. I also ask whether the radiator fins, fan shroud and the rest of the cooling system have been inspected.
OE / VIN · FITMENT · TEST · WARRANTYOn the highway the wind forces air through. In traffic the fan is the only airflow there is — so a slipping clutch only shows up crawling along.
How the clutch works, and how it quits
A viscous fan clutch is a fluid coupling sitting between the belt and the fan. There's a coil spring on the front that feels the heat coming off the radiator. Engine hot, it lets thick silicone fluid into the coupling and the fan grabs and roars. Engine cool, it lets the fan freewheel and go quiet. Simple and clever.
Over the years that silicone fluid breaks down and weeps past the seal. Now the clutch never fully grabs — the fan just spins along lazily, never really pulling hard, and it can't shift enough air to cope when you're sat still in the heat.
The test
Start with the engine switched off and cold, following the vehicle's service information. Fan resistance, commanded engagement, temperature, airflow and scan data can all help, but no single spin or sound test proves the clutch has failed. Never reach near a fan, belt or pulley with the engine running.
What else cooks a car in hot, dusty places
Don't stop at the clutch. Sand and dust cake the radiator fins from the front so air can't get through even when everything else is fine. And a fan shroud that's cracked or missing — really common on older trucks — lets the fan pull air from around the sides instead of through the radiator, and nobody ever thinks to look.
The honest line that makes you the expert: on any car overheating in traffic in a hot climate, check the fan clutch, then hose out the radiator fins, then look for the shroud. Start with the simplest checks before major replacement, in that order. Say that and the customer knows you actually understand his problem.
What to look for when you buy
A fan clutch is a sealed fluid coupling — the amount of silicone inside and the spring calibration are the whole product, and you can't see either from outside. So this is one to buy tested, from someone who stands behind it, not off the unverified source. Confirm the fan blade fits and the mounting matches — send the VIN.
What I check before shipment
I confirm the VIN, fan diameter, blade fitment, hub thread or bolt pattern and the clutch calibration. I also ask whether the radiator fins, fan shroud and the rest of the cooling system have been inspected.
Diagnosis and safety note
This guide describes common failure patterns, not a final diagnosis. Confirm fault codes, live data, wiring, fitment and the vehicle-specific service information before ordering or fitting a part. Safety-critical, refrigerant, high-pressure and drivetrain work should be handled by a qualified technician using the correct procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Can you refill one with silicone fluid? People try. It's not built to be opened, the seal is the thing that failed in the first place, and you can't get the calibration right on a kitchen table. New unit. Don't waste an afternoon.
It overheats at speed too — still the fan? The fault may involve the wider cooling system rather than the fan clutch alone. If it's hot on the open road as well, the fan isn't your problem — look at the radiator, the water pump, the thermostat or a head gasket. The whole point of the fan clutch fault is that speed fixes it.
Is swapping to electric fans a good idea? Works nicely on some trucks, a proper headache on others. For most people, a good original-style clutch is the cheaper, simpler fix that just works.
Need cooling parts for hot markets?
I supply fan clutches, radiators, thermostats, water pumps and AC parts out of China — tested, matched to your VIN, with warranty. This is bread-and-butter stuff for hot climates and I move a lot of it. Send me the VIN on WhatsApp and I will confirm fitment, testing, warranty and shipping options before you order.
