What an electronic throttle body does
There's no cable to the pedal anymore. The pedal's just a sensor, the computer decides how much air the engine gets, and a little motor inside the throttle body swings the plate open. There's also a position sensor in there telling the computer exactly where that plate is sitting. Idle, drivability, traction control — it all runs through this one part.
Why carbon matters so much
Carbon builds up as a ring around the bore, right where the plate closes — from the breather, from the EGR on diesels, from normal blow-by. That ring shrinks the opening. And at idle the plate's barely cracked open, so even a thin ring is a big chunk of the airflow gone.
Now here's the bit that catches everyone. The computer notices the engine's a bit starved at idle, so it learns. Over three years it slowly opens the plate a little further and a little further to make up for the carbon. Car idles fine. Nobody notices a thing.
I match the VIN, bore and connector, then confirm whether the replacement requires adaptation, relearning or coding. That requirement is written into the offer before shipment so it is not mistaken for a defective part.
OE / VIN · FITMENT · TEST · WARRANTYThe computer spent years learning to work around the carbon. Scrub the carbon off and all that learning is suddenly wrong.
So why does cleaning break it
Because you took the carbon away but you left the learning behind. The computer's still holding the plate open as if the ring were there. Now the bore's back to full size and the plate's open too far — so the engine's getting way too much air at idle. It hunts, it races, it stalls.
The part's clean. The part's fine. It's the computer that's now wrong.
The step everyone skips
Follow the vehicle-specific adaptation or relearn procedure with suitable diagnostic equipment. On some vehicles cleaning is enough; others require a defined relearn, coding or additional diagnosis. On a lot of cars there's a set relearn procedure — key on, wait a bit, let it idle a while, don't touch the throttle.
Say this to anyone buying a throttle body or planning to clean one: clean it, then reset the adaptation, or a clean throttle body will idle worse than the dirty one did. That one sentence saves an afternoon and makes you the person who actually knows.
What about a brand new one
Same problem, only bigger. A new throttle body bolted on without adaptation and coding will idle badly, and now the workshop's convinced you sent a dud. On a lot of cars the new unit has to be coded to the computer, not just adapted.
So ask before you ship: does this one need coding? And tell the customer up front. A part that needs coding isn't a bad part — but a part that needs coding when nobody mentioned it is a warranty row waiting to happen.
What I check before shipment

Diagnosis and safety note
This guide describes common failure patterns, not a final diagnosis. Confirm fault codes, live data, wiring, fitment and the vehicle-specific service information before ordering or fitting a part. Safety-critical, refrigerant, high-pressure and drivetrain work should be handled by a qualified technician using the correct procedures.
Frequently asked questions
Can you clean it with normal carb cleaner? Careful — some plates have a coating that harsh cleaner strips right off. Use proper throttle body cleaner and don't scrub the bore hard.
Why does it carbon up again so fast? Because the source is still there. A leaking breather or a heavy EGR flow is making the deposit. Fix the source or you'll be cleaning it again next year.
Throttle light came on after fitting — why? Missing coding or adaptation is one possibility, but wiring, fitment, air leaks and the correct part number also need checking. Check that before you decide the part's faulty.
Need throttle bodies and engine electronics?
I supply throttle bodies, MAF sensors, PCV valve covers and engine electronics for BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Toyota out of China — tested, matched to your VIN, coding needs confirmed before it ships, with warranty.
