Range Rover Air Suspension Failure: The Complete Guide (L322, L405, L494)

Why does Range Rover air suspension fail?

The air spring is, at its heart, a rubber bag holding compressed air. Rubber ages. Every time the car rises and drops, the rubber folds and unfolds. Over the years, tiny cracks form in the folding area. Heat makes this much faster: in the Gulf, in Africa, and in other hot regions, air springs that would last 6 to 8 years in Europe often fail in 2 to 4 years.

This applies to every generation: the L322 (2002 to 2012), the L405 (2013 to 2021), the L494 Range Rover Sport (2014 to 2022), and their Vogue and Autobiography versions. Different part designs, same rubber problem.

What are the 3 most common failure patterns?

Pattern 1: The slow leak. The car sits lower on one corner after standing overnight. In the morning it looks tilted, then the compressor pumps it back up. This is an early-stage rubber crack. It always gets worse. Left alone, weeks or months later, it becomes pattern 2.

Pattern 2: The sudden drop. The suspension fault message appears, the car drops to the bumpstops and stays there. The crack has opened fully. The car may be undrivable, or drivable only at low speed. At this point the spring must be replaced.

Pattern 3: The compressor chain reaction. This is the one many people miss. When a spring leaks, the compressor runs far more often to keep the car up. Compressors are not designed for that duty. They overheat, the piston ring wears, and the compressor fails — sometimes shortly after someone has replaced only the leaking spring. This is why a leaking spring, ignored for months, often turns into a spring plus compressor bill.

How long do Range Rover air springs last in hot climates?

As a working rule: 2 to 4 years or 60,000 to 120,000 km in Gulf-type heat, against 6 to 8 years in mild climates. UV, sand, and 50-degree summers all attack the rubber. If a car in a hot region still has its original springs after 5 years, they are living on borrowed time — smart workshops recommend replacing them before the summer, not after the failure.

Should you replace one air spring or both?

Both sides of the same axle, always. The two springs are the same age, made of the same rubber, working in the same heat. If the left one has just failed, the right one is close behind. Replacing in pairs means one repair instead of two, one alignment check instead of two, and no angry comeback three months later. For workshops, offering the pair is also simply better business: the labour overlaps, and the customer gets a suspension that sits level.

How do you tell a well-made replacement air spring from a poor-quality one?

Three checks. First, the rubber. Quality rubber feels soft and elastic, like a new tire; poor-quality rubber feels hard and plastic-like, and hard rubber cracks fast. Second, the metal rings and end caps. Good springs use aluminum parts that do not rust; lower-grade units use plain steel that rusts within a year — and a rusty ring destroys the seal from the inside, so the spring leaks even though the rubber looks fine. Third, testing. Every air spring should be air-tested — inflated and checked for leaks — before it ships. If a supplier cannot tell you how their springs are tested, that tells you everything.

One more point: L322, L405, and L494 springs look similar in photos but are not interchangeable, and within one model there can be differences by year and by standard or sport suspension. Always confirm the exact OE number against the VIN before ordering. Most wrong-part disasters start with someone matching a photo instead of a number.
